A comprehensive eye exam is like a checkup for your eyes. When you walk out of your appointment, you should:

• Know your vision needs — and have an updated prescription if needed
• Have a good sense of your overall vision health
• Know what follow-up appointments or tests may be needed

Here’s what to expect after your exam.

Expect your vision to be blurry for a few hours if your pupils are dilated

Once that medicine wears off, you’ll be able to take off your sunglasses and see normally again. Because your vision will be blurred, it’s a good idea to clear your schedule of any tasks that require you to see well. You may also want someone to drive you home from your appointment.

If you’re interested in new glasses

You may be able to try on glasses at your eye doctor’s office. (For XP Health members, remember to use your NVA discount if you qualify!) 

You can choose from over 3,000 frames online or on the XP Health app (available for iOS and Android). Try on and order a new look right from your computer or phone!

If you’re interested in contact lenses

Your eye doctor may give you some trial lenses to take home. You’ll try out the lenses for a few days to make sure you see well and feel comfortable. You’ll return to your doctor’s office in a few days so your doctor can check your eyes, do a final fitting, and answer any questions you have. Your doctor will then give you a contact lens prescription so you can order your new contact lenses.

In addition, you should exit your appointment with the following

• Your prescription for eyeglasses and/or contact lenses so you can order eyewear online
• Your pupillary distance measurement so you can order eyeglasses online
• A copy of your medical record if your doctor finds anything of concern; you can share this with your primary care doctor and/or take it with you if you need to see a specialist for any follow-up exams
• A schedule for follow-up visits based on what your eye doctor recommends
